Aamir Khan has refuted the long standing discussion that it has been said that the famous character Phunsuk Wangdu (Rancho) of the superhit film ‘3 Idiots’ released in 2009 was inspired by the life of Ladakh’s innovator and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk. In a public event, Aamir Khan clearly said that neither he nor the writers of the film had any knowledge about Sonam Wangchuk at the time of writing the story of the film. However, he supported Wangchuk’s education reform efforts and expressed concern about his hunger strike.
Didn’t know about Sonam Wangchuk while writing ‘3 Idiots’
Aamir Khan spoke at length on the issue in a question-answer session held after the screening of ‘3 Idiots’ at the London Indian Film Festival (LIFF). He said, “There is a misconception among people that ‘3 Idiots’ was based on Sonam Wangchuk’s life. This is completely wrong. When the film was being written, we had no knowledge about Sonam Wangchuk and I did not even know her personally.” Aamir also said that despite this, the work Sonam Wangchuk is doing is highly commendable.
Expressed concern over Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike
Aamir Khan said that Sonam Wangchuk is currently on an indefinite hunger strike and her health is continuously deteriorating. He said, “The cause for which Sonam Wangchuk is fighting is absolutely right. But many people believe that now she should end this hunger strike in view of her deteriorating health.” Expressing concern about Wangchuk’s health, Aamir also wished for his speedy recovery.

During this, Aamir Khan also reacted to Omi Vaidya’s recently viral video. Omi Vaidya played the character of Chatur Ramalingam in ‘3 Idiots’. In the viral video, Omi Vaidya had supported Sonam Wangchuk’s movement and said that the character of Phunsuk Wangdu in the film was inspired by her. After this statement, demand for reaction from Aamir Khan also started rising on social media. Now Aamir Khan termed this claim as wrong and said, “What Chatur i.e. Omi Vaidya said in the video is not correct.”
‘There is no need to connect Sonam Wangchuk with films to get respect’
Aamir Khan said that Sonam Wangchuk’s work is so important that there is no need to link it to any film or character to respect her. He said, “Sonam Wangchuk deserves respect for his work. To prove his achievements, it is not necessary to say that he was the inspiration for any character in ‘3 Idiots’.”

Sonam Wangchuk is currently sitting on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Their protest has been going on for more than two weeks.
