Yamraj and Yamuna are brother and sister. Both of them are sons of Lord Surya. According to mythology, after a long time, one day Yamraj reached Vishram Ghat in Mathura to meet his sister Yamuna. Yamuna ji was very happy to see her brother in front of her. He honored him. Tilak was applied to him and he was served delicious food. Yamraj was pleased with his sister’s love and hospitality.
After this Yamraj asked Yamuna ji to ask for a boon. On this, Yamuna ji said to Yamraj, please grant me this boon that on this day, all the brothers and sisters who meet lovingly, have food at their sister’s house and bathe in my water, should not face the fear of untimely death.
