BCCI approaches former India stars to train future Test prospects

New Delhi: Former India bowlers Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh will oversee short training camps for a select list of prospective future Test stars at the request of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

These camps with “targetted players” will be held in Bengaluru at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence whose Head of Cricket VVS Laxman has already approached his former national team-mates with his plan for player development.

Players have been picked on the basis of their performance in age group, first class and India A levels, with an eye on potential senior national team prospects.

“Laxman approached Zaheer, Harbhajan and Kumble for specialised camps. Bhajji (Harbhajan) is trying to work out the dates for four-five day ‘off-spinners’ camp’,” a BCCI source told PTI.

He is looking forward to help the upcoming prospects who have done well at the age-group and India A level and work with them. This is a welcome initiative where those who have played 100 plus Tests for India are sharing their experiences with Gen-Next.”

Khan is already in Bengaluru for a five-day camp with young pacers who have been identified as next in line to be called up for the senior team. India’s highest wicket-taker across Tests and ODIs, Kumble could hold a wrist spinners’ camp.

These camps will be held before 2026 Indian Premier League’s commencement in the last week of March as most of the chosen players will be expected to join their respective IPL teams.

VRV, Aravind in fray for COE pace bowling coach’s job

Former India pacers VRV Singh and Srinath Aravind are among the candidates in contention for pace bowling coach’s job at the COE.

Both have been in charge of COE’s various age group camps and have completed coaching level courses under the aegis of the BCCI before applying for the permanent staff positions.

BCCI had advertised for the post after the retirement of Englishman Troy Cooley, who has attained the age of 60 years, while former India bowler Sunil Joshi continues to helm the spin bowling department.
