T20 World Cup 2026: The 51st match of T20 World Cup 2026 was played between the teams of Pakistan and Sri Lanka. In this match, Pakistan team won by 5 runs, but it missed qualifying for the semi-finals. On the other hand, the performance of the Sri Lankan team was also not special and their tournament ended with defeat. After this bad game, there is turmoil in the team and the head coach of the team has decided to resign from his post.
Big decision as soon as you are out of T20 World Cup
Sri Lankan cricket team head coach Sanath Jayasuriya has decided to resign from his post. He made this announcement after the team was out of the T20 World Cup 2026. Jayasuriya made it clear in the press conference after the match that his contact was till June 2026, but now he does not want to extend it further. He said that I felt that now the time has come to hand over this responsibility to someone else.
Got the responsibility after 2024 T20 World Cup
Jayasuriya took over as the head coach of Sri Lanka right after the 2024 T20 World Cup. The beginning of his tenure was quite brilliant. Feats like winning the ODI series against India after 27 years in August 2024, winning the Test match at The Oval in September and 2-0 Test series win against New Zealand at home were seen. These successes brought new energy to the team. But in the following months the team’s performance started declining. Despite playing all the matches at home in the T20 World Cup 2026, the Sri Lankan team could not make it to the semi-finals, which is a big setback for the team.
Information not given to Sri Lanka Cricket
However, Jayasuriya did not inform his decision to the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Board in advance. This decision has come suddenly, although he made it clear that the World Cup was his last assignment. In such a situation, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board will now have to search for a new coach. But Jayasuriya can remain with the team in the limited overs series against Afghanistan to be held in Sharjah from March 13.
