It tells how Holika was burnt and Prahlad, a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, was saved, but how was Prahlad saved and why did Holika get burnt even after the boon? Let us know about it in detail.

according to legend…

According to the legend, Holika had performed severe penance for Lord Brahma. Pleased with Holika’s penance, Lord Brahma gave her a sheet. This sheet always kept him safe from fire. This was the boon of Lord Brahma. He had told Holika that when she wore this sheet, she would not be affected by fire. Holika’s brother Hiranyakashyap knew about this boon given to his sister.

When all the efforts of Hiranyakashyap to kill Prahlad failed, he asked Holika to sit in the fire of Holi with her son Prahlad. Holika did as per her brother’s advice and sat in the fire of Holi with Prahlad, but during this Holika herself got burnt and Prahlad was saved. When Holika sat on the fire with Prahlad, he started chanting the name of Lord Vishnu.

Because of this Holika got burnt in the fire

Prahlad was saved by the grace of Lord Vishnu and Holika got burnt in the fire. Holika was burnt because the intention behind it was to spread deceit, sin and harm innocent people. The day Holika burnt in the fire was the full moon day of Phalgun month. Since then, Holika Dahan started being celebrated on this day as the victory of good over evil.
