T20 World Cup 2026: ICC’s rule due to which India will reach the semi-finals even without playing the match

T20 World Cup 2026: The Super-8 round of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 has started and India is in Group-1 along with South Africa, West Indies and Zimbabwe. India’s first Super-8 match is to be played against South Africa today in Ahmedabad. Let us tell you, there is no carryover of points from the group stage in Super-8, all the teams start from zero. Each team plays three matches and the top 2 go to the semi-finals. If matches in any group are canceled due to rain, then both the teams get 1 point. Apart from this, ICC has also decided the playing conditions of the tournament.

Tension increased for all teams due to rain

Recently, the first match of Super-8 could not be played due to rain. Due to which Pakistan and New Zealand teams were given 1 point each. In such a situation, the biggest question is that what will happen if all the matches of any group in Super-8 are canceled due to rain or any other reason? Later, in the playing conditions of the tournament, ICC has given different conditions for qualification beyond the Super-8 round, due to which India can reach the semi-finals even without playing any match.

How will India reach the semi-finals without playing a match?

According to ICC rules, the decision to reach the semi-finals will first be based on the points table. The top 2 teams will get a place in the semi-finals. At the same time, if the points are equal, the team winning more matches in the Super-8 round will advance. But if the number of matches is equal then the decision will be taken on the basis of net run-rate. If the net run-rate remains equal then the winner of the match between the two teams will qualify. But what if there are no competitions?

In a situation where all the matches of Group-1 are washed out, then all four teams will be tied with 3 points each. The winning number will be 0. Then net run-rate will be applicable, but when no match is played then NRR will also remain 0. Head-to-head will also not be possible because no match took place. In such a situation, the last tie-breaker will be the ICC T20I ranking. India is on top in the T20I rankings. That is why India can reach the semi-finals without playing any match.
