New Delhi: Two men were allegedly arrested in Delhi for running a gang that allegedly duped women after befriending them through matrimonial sites, police said. The accused would target divorced women through matrimonial websites, promise to marry them, and then flee with their gold jewellery, police said.
The police also recovered jewellery worth lakhs of rupees, Rs 64,000 in cash, two mobile phones, and the car used in the crime from their possession.
How crime came to light
The matter came to light after a 35-year-old woman from Panipat filed a complaint at Parliament Street Police Station on February 17, alleging a man named Abhinav Singh met her on a matrimonial website and duped her on the pretext of marriage.
She alleged Singh lured her to Gurudwara Bangla Sahib on the pretext of marriage. There, he gained her trust and took her gold chain and bracelets under the pretext of keeping the jewellery safe. As soon as he had the opportunity, he fled with the woman’s bag, two mobile phones, and important documents, police said. Based on the complaint, police immediately registered a case and began an investigation. Footage from over 200 CCTV cameras was examined, and technical surveillance led to the accused.
Accused would target diovorced women
The police team subsequently conducted a raid and arrested 31-year-old Abhinav Singh and 26-year-old Karan Sharma. During the interrogation, Singh revelead had previously been arrested for fraud. He had absconded after being released on parole. He also told police that he would target divorced women in various states, including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Delhi.
His accomplice, Karan Sharma, a cab driver, arranged for a car with a fake license plate to pose as a prominent businessman and facilitate their escape after the crime. After the crime, the accused would sell the jewellery at a shop in Malviya Nagar, according to police. Police have recovered the stolen jewellery from there. The role of the shop owner is also being investigated.
