MS Dhoni set for bigger CSK role after Stephen Fleming exit? Report reveals franchise’s plan

Chennai Super Kings legend MS Dhoni could take on a significantly expanded role within the franchise following Stephen Fleming’s departure as head coach, according to a report by RevSportz.

The report claims Dhoni is being considered for the role of team mentor and could also be entrusted with overseeing the franchise’s cricket operations as CSK begin a new era after Fleming’s 18-year tenure.

MS Dhoni could help appoint Fleming’s successor

According to the report, Dhoni is expected to play a major role in identifying and appointing Chennai Super Kings’ next head coach.

While it remains unclear whether he will officially assume the mentor’s role ahead of IPL 2027 or in the following season, sources told RevSportz that the former India captain is likely to be given greater responsibility behind the scenes.

The report further states that Dhoni could be handed complete control of the franchise’s cricket-related affairs as CSK look to rebuild after two disappointing seasons.

CSK enter transition after Fleming departure

CSK announced on Monday that Stephen Fleming had mutually parted ways with the franchise, ending one of the longest and most successful coaching partnerships in IPL history.

Fleming joined Chennai as a player in the inaugural IPL season in 2008 before becoming head coach in 2009.

During his tenure, CSK won five IPL titles, two Champions League T20 trophies, reached 10 IPL finals and qualified for the playoffs on 12 occasions.

However, the franchise finished at the bottom of the table in IPL 2025 before another disappointing campaign in 2026, prompting a major overhaul.

MS Dhoni remains central to CSK despite injury-hit season

Although Dhoni did not feature in IPL 2026 due to injury, he remains one of the most influential figures within the franchise.

The former India captain has remained closely involved with the team and is widely regarded as the architect of CSK’s culture alongside Fleming.

If the report proves accurate, his role could become even more prominent as Chennai prepare for life after their long-serving head coach.

No official confirmation yet

Neither Chennai Super Kings nor Dhoni has officially confirmed the reported changes.

The franchise is also yet to announce Fleming’s successor, with several names, including Hemang Badani, Rahul Dravid and Michael Clarke, having been linked with the vacant position in recent media reports.
