Ireland is temporarily allowing eligible foreign residents to travel with expired Irish Residence Permission (IRP) cards while renewal applications remain pending. The relief applies from July 13 to August 31, 2026, giving thousands of residents, including Indians, extra flexibility as processing delays continue.
The temporary arrangement comes as Irish Residence Permission (IRP) card renewals are taking anywhere from 7 to 17 weeks, with some categories facing the longest waits.
Right to Work Also Continues
The temporary measure also protects eligible residents whose IRP cards expire while their renewal is in process. To remain eligible, applicants must:
- Submit the IRP renewal application before the current permission expires.
- Upload all required documents during the application process.
- Hold a valid employment permit throughout the renewal period, if one is required for their immigration status.
Those who do not require an employment permit can also continue residing in Ireland under the same temporary arrangement.
What Happens After August 31?
The concession ends on August 31, 2026.
From September 1, expired IRP cards will no longer be accepted for travel or re-entry into Ireland. The government will also restore its standard 12-week Notice to Employers policy, allowing eligible workers to remain under their existing immigration conditions while renewal applications are processed.
Those protections will still apply only if the renewal application was filed before the previous permission expired.
What This Means for Foreigners Living in Ireland
For all foreign professionals, students, and families already living in Ireland, the change removes one immediate concern. If you applied to renew your IRP card before it expired, you can continue travelling, and where eligible, keep living and working in Ireland until August 31, 2026.
If you’re planning a trip to India or another country before returning to Ireland, you must carry:
- Your expired IRP card
- A printed Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) travel notice
- Proof that your IRP renewal application was submitted before expiry
- A valid employment permit, where required
Travellers should also check with their airline before departure, as carriers must accept the ISD travel notice in place of the expired IRP card.
Delays Are Becoming Harder to Ignore
Ireland has been battling longer IRP processing times since late 2025, with some Stamp 4 renewals taking around 17 weeks. This temporary fix reflects a wider trend across several immigration systems, where governments are extending short-term relief instead of solving processing backlogs more quickly.
Travelobiz Take:
We think this is a practical short-term fix for Indians living in Ireland. I would still avoid leaving renewal applications until the last minute because these travel concessions end on August 31, 2026.
