Washington DC [यूएस]July 15 (ANI): Actor Michael Johnston has said that despite the huge box office success of horror hit ‘Obsession’, there are no plans for a sequel at the moment, according to People.
The 30-year-old actor said he would be happy to return to the franchise, but clarified that no sequel is in development. Johnston said, “Look, it’s a magical world. Anything can happen. I would love that.”
There are no plans for ‘Obsession 2’
Michael Johnston plays Bear in the film, who is a music store employee. He buys a supernatural toy for his friend Nikki (Inde Navarrete), which grants her wish that she fall in love with him. It was written, directed and edited by Kari Barker.
He added, “I will say, there’s no plan for it. At the same time, I don’t know how many people would want Baer back. I think the general consensus is that he got what he deserved.”
Johnston jokingly pitched the idea for his sequel, saying it could be based on Bear’s parents returning to town and asking what happened, before accidentally stepping on the mysterious willow tree themselves. However, he expressed excitement over writer-director Kari Barker’s idea of turning ‘Obsession’ into an anthology series that would feature separate stories. According to People, he said, “Curry’s idea of making it an anthology series is really great. All different stories. I’d love to see one that gets done right.”
The film created a stir at the box office
The comments come as ‘Obsession’ emerged as one of this year’s biggest independent horror successes. The supernatural thriller, which released across theaters on May 15, has grossed over US$400 million worldwide, including US$245 million domestically and US$157 million internationally.
According to reports, the film, made on a budget of US$750,000 and shot in just 20 days, has outperformed expectations at the box office.
The film is about a hopeless romantic whose wish to win his crush comes true when he breaks the mysterious ‘One Wish Willow’, only to learn that getting exactly what he wanted has dire consequences.
Actor spoke on the climax and characters of the film
Reflecting on the film, Johnston also answered one of its biggest questions: whether Nikki, played by Andy Navarrete, was actually in love with her character Bear.
“That’s a great question, and I never asked myself that until long after shooting was over,” he said. Johnston said that Bayer never believed that Nikki could truly have feelings for him due to his lack of confidence. However, according to People, after discussions with Navarrete and Barker after filming, they became convinced that Nikki had expressed her feelings subtly, before losing patience when Bayer failed to open up.
Dark ending was shot for the film
He also revealed that the filmmakers had initially shot a very dark ending in which Nikki dies. According to People, Johnston said, “There were a few different moments that we experimented with. The biggest one was… Nikki is going to make a decision at the end. The first thing we did was actually film the scene of the gun going off and the blood splattering. It was practical, it was very gruesome, and it was devastating.”
Ultimately this scene was abandoned in favor of an ending in which Nikki survives. Johnston further stated that Navarrete’s emotional final scene was captured in a single take.
Actress Inde Navarrete likes to connect directly with fans
Navarrete previously stated that she had intentionally stayed away from online discussions regarding the film’s growing popularity, preferring instead to connect with fans in person. She said, “This is the beginning of a new process and a new step in my career, and I really want to make sure that I protect myself first and also thank everyone who loved the film.”
He further said that avoiding social media has made personal interactions with fans more meaningful. Navarrete said, “What I get in person is allowing me to physically see the person, get what they’re saying and tell them ‘thank you’ directly.”
According to People, ‘Obsession’ is currently playing in theaters and is also available for digital purchase. (ANI)
