New Delhi. The Election Commission of India (ECI) is likely to announce the dates for the assembly elections to be held in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry in mid-March. Officials gave this information on Tuesday. It is likely that voting will be held in these four states and one union territory on different dates during April.
Assembly elections 2026: Announcement of dates possible in mid-March
According to officials, the Election Commission is preparing to announce the election schedule of all five assemblies simultaneously. However, considering the situation and security arrangements of each state, voting can be conducted in different phases. The tenure of all these assemblies is ending on different dates in May and June.
- The tenure of Puducherry Assembly will end on June 15.
- The tenure of Assam Assembly is till May 20.
- The tenure of the Kerala Assembly will end on May 23.
- The tenure of Tamil Nadu Assembly is till May 10.
- The tenure of the West Bengal Assembly will end on May 7.
In how many phases was voting held in the last elections?
In the last assembly elections, voting was conducted in different phases in different states.
- In West Bengal, voting was held in maximum 8 phases.
- Voting was conducted in two phases in Assam.
- Elections were held in a single phase in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry.
This time also the number of phases will be decided on the basis of security and administrative needs.
Election Commission preparation and review meetings
The Election Commission has already started preparations for the elections. Commission teams are visiting the respective states and reviewing the arrangements. At present a team of the Commission is present in Assam, where the preparations for the elections are being reviewed.
Final Electoral Roll and Special Intensive Revision (SIR)
The process of updating the voter list before the elections is also going on. Final electoral rolls are being released after revision. Puducherry first published its final voter list under Special Intensive Revision (SIR) on February 14. Tamil Nadu will release its post-SIR final electoral roll on Tuesday Kerala will publish its final voter list on February 21. The final voter list of West Bengal will be released on 28 February. In Assam, special revision was done instead of SIR and the final voter list has been published there on 10 February. The objective of the Election Commission is to ensure transparent and fair elections in all states. Now all eyes are on the official announcement of election dates to be held in mid-March.
