Noida: Car plunges into open drain in Sector 70, residents allege civic negligence

New Delhi: In yet another case of civic negligence from Noida, a car parked on the roadside plunged into an open drain on Thursday night. The incident was reported from Basai village in Sector 70. This incident once again brings to light the safety concerns around open pits in Delhi-NCR.

Recently 2 similar incidents, one from Delhi and another from Noida were reported. While in one case, reported just a day back a 32-year-old man died after his bike fell into an open drain in Delhi’s Rohini, in the other a techie Yuvraj Mehta lost his life after his car fell into a deep water-filled pit in Noida’s Sector 150.

Car plunges into open drain

In the most recent case, reported from Noida Sector 70, a car slipped and fell into an open drain. There were reportedly no occupants in the car when it fell in the drain. The police said that the driver of the vehicle had parked his car outside a liquor shop and stepped out to grab some items.

It was at that time that the car rolled suddenly and fell into the ditch. Had the driver not stepped out of the car, this could have been yet another fatal tragedy, the police said. A video of the car rolling and falling in the drain has now gone viral on social media.

The locals called the police soon after and the car was pulled out of the drain. The locals said that they had complained repeatedly about the open drain in the area to the concerned authorities, but they alleged that no action was taken by them. They said that this open pit posed a major risk to both pedestrians and motorists.

Previous incident in Noida

This incident comes just weeks after an engineer Yuvraj Mehta died after his car fell into a water-filled pit in Noida Sector 150. This case led to huge outrage and people demanded accountability. They started questioning authorities as to why such dangerous zones, like open pits and huge holes, which are made during construction work are not properly marked. They said that these pose a grave danger to motorists, especially at night.

In another case in Delhi, a bank employee lost his life after his vehicle fell in a 15-foot deep pit in Janakpuri. Following the death of the man, the National Green Tribunal issued notices to the Centre and other concerned authorities regarding 60 to 80 foot deep hazardous open pits which come up during construction work by various companies.
