According to the legend, the Lord along with his elder brother Balabhadra ji and sister Subhadra ji went to the place of his aunt Gundicha Devi. At that time Mata Lakshmi was in the temple itself. Lord did not take Goddess Lakshmi with himself. Mother Lakshmi was deeply shocked by this. His sorrow was not about the journey, but about separation from Jagannath Swami. Goddess Lakshmi became extremely angry at being abandoned by the Lord in this manner.

Then Goddess Mahalakshmi went on a visit to Gundicha temple. According to traditions, this happened on the fifth day of the Lord’s visit to his aunt’s place. When Mata Lakshmi reached Gundicha Devi temple, she could not find God. However, Lord Jagannath ji said that he would return in three days. When the door was closed and she could not meet Lord Jagannath, Goddess Lakshmi became angry and broke a piece of Jagannath’s chariot. This tradition is still alive today through the ritual of ‘Hera Panchami’.
