Flowers for Worship: Flowers have been used in worship for thousands of years. No divine work is considered complete without flowers. Many rules related to offering flowers to God are also mentioned in religious texts.
Hindu Puja Flowers: In Hindu religion, offering flowers during puja is a symbol of reverence and respect. 1. Withered or dried flowers
During puja, first of all it is kept in mind that the flowers should be fresh. Withered, dry or rotten flowers should not be offered to God. For example, if flowers plucked in the morning wither and dry up by evening, then do not use them again in worship the next day.
2. Flowers fallen on the ground
One should avoid offering flowers that have fallen on the ground in worship. It is believed that such flowers lose their purity. However, if the flowers are kept in a clean cloth or puja thali, the condition is different.
3. Flowers infested with insects or broken
Flowers which are infested with insects, have broken petals or are spoiled are not considered suitable for worship. Only clean and fragrant flowers should be offered or used in puja.
4. Ketaki flower is not offered to Lord Shiva.
Ketaki (Kevra) flower is not offered to Lord Shiva. The reason for this is a story from Shiva Purana, in which the Ketaki flower supported untruth. For this reason this flower is not used in Shiva worship. However, the fragrance of Kevada is used in some religious functions.
Can artificial flowers be offered?
No. Only natural and fresh flowers should be used in worship. Artificial flowers should be used only for decoration.
