No matter how much information is given to people, some evils are still present in the society. Devadasi system is one of them. Despite the implementation of stringent laws to prevent this practice, many girls are still secretly falling victim to this practice. Now a similar incident has come to light from Bellary district of Karnataka. However, due to the cleverness of the police, the girl survived becoming ‘Devdasi’.
Kurugodu police of Bellary district said that the girl was being forcibly included in the Devdasi system by her family. The girl was married to the young man from whom she loved. A young woman from the Wadatty Cross of Kurugodu taluk loved a young man from her own village. When the woman’s mother came to know about this, she opposed this love and said that if she married that young man, she would have to become a servant of the gods.
When the woman tried to hold the hand of the young man, which she loved, her mother forcibly kissed her and tried to make her a goddess, but the woman, who was distressed by her mother’s act, knocked on the door of the police station through the Devadasi Mukti Sangathan. The girl disagreed with her mother’s decision to make Devadasi, so she contacted the Devdasi Mukti Sangh, who planned her rehabilitation.
Police called the family and explained
Devdasi Mukti Sangh immediately informed PSI Supreith of Kurugodu police station. The police sub -inspector called the girl and the young man’s family to the police station and explained to them about the ill effects of Devadasi system. Then, he decided to unite the two lovers and got them married in front of everyone in the Doddabasveshvera temple of Kurugode. In this way, he rescued a young woman, who was being pushed into the Devdasi system and grabbed the hand of the young man she loved.
What is a devadasi system?
Devadasi means ‘servant of God’. Traditionally, a young woman is dedicated to a deity or temple. During the week of the goddess, on Tuesday and Friday, Jogati people gather and garland the woman whom they recognize. It is called tying lumps. Later he is given the title of Devadasi.
Once dedicated, a young woman has to serve the temple in every way throughout his life. Rituals must be performed. This tradition, which is going on from the past, is still prevalent there. This type of practice is mostly found in the southern and western parts of India.
