Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar is known as the creator of the Indian Constitution. He was a great thinker who played a central role in social and legal changes in India. Dr. Ambedkar was born on 14 April 1891 in a Dalit family in Mhow city of Madhya Pradesh. Ambedkar had to face inhuman things like social discrimination and untouchability since childhood, but he never gave up. Despite difficulties, he received higher education. He obtained a doctoral degree from leading institutions like Columbia University (America) and London School of Economics (England). He always raised his voice against casteism, untouchability and social discrimination. He believed that education is the greatest power to change the society. Keeping this idea in mind, he established the “Backed Hitkarini Sabha” in 1923, which was a big step towards education and social reform.
Dr. Ambedkar is called the creator of the Indian Constitution. While drafting the Indian Constitution, he ensured that every citizen of the country – whether of any caste, religion, language or class – should get the right to equality, justice and freedom. His constitution is still our strongest democratic foundation.
He became the first Law Minister of the country after India’s independence in 1947. Later he adopted Buddhism in protest against caste discrimination and untouchability and paved the way for social change by connecting millions of people.
In 1956, Dr. Ambedkar adopted Buddhism with millions of followers. He had said – ‘I will accept a religion that teaches freedom, equality and fraternity.’ His works created a new wave of social awareness. Dr. Ambedkar was awarded the National Level Bharat Ratna Award in 1990 for his contribution.
Dr. Ambedkar’s life was not limited to education or constitution, he was a social revolutionary. He participated in the fight against untouchability, casteism and social discrimination throughout his life. He launched several movements to bring self -respect and rights to Dalits, women and underprivileged.
