There was a lot of uproar in the West Bengal Assembly on Monday (March 10). The opposition party strongly opposed the decision of Assembly Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay to shut down the BJP MLA’s mike in the House. After this, president BJP MLA Deepak Burman was suspended for the remaining session.
After this, on the orders of Assembly Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay on the charge of conducting unparliamentary behavior, Marshal dropped two BJP MLAs Shankar Ghosh and Manoj Oraon from the House. The Speaker suspended BJP MLA Deepak Burman from Palakata in North Bengal for 30 days for tearing the paper inside the House and raising slogans.
BJP walked out of the house
In protest against this action, BJP MLAs walked out of the assembly and accused Assembly Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay of adopting a biased attitude. The development started when BJP MLA Hiran Chatterjee was questioning why the Public Service Commission (WBPSC) is being prevented from fulfilling its responsibilities. He expressed concern about the functioning of WBPSC. He questioned why the Commission did not get a single public complaint since the Trinamool Congress government came to power in the state in 2011.
BJP MLA did not stop even after the president stopped
Hiran Chatterjee, citing a note of the Chief Secretary sent to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, also alleged that the Commission did not have the legal right to deal with the complaints. Chatterjee was speaking, during this time, the Speaker told him that his statement is not related to the discussion on the budget. Despite this, the BJP MLA continued to speak.
After this, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly closed his mike, causing the BJP MLA to become angry and described it as a conspiracy to suppress the voice of the opposition. In protest, MLAs Shankar Ghosh and Manoj Oraon started shouting slogans in the House and the uproar started. The Speaker warned him several times but did not stop the ruckus. After this, the Speaker called Marshal and sent both the MLAs out of the House.
Leader of Opposition Shubhendu Adhikari condemns action
After this action, the Leader of Opposition Shubhendu Adhikari condemned the decision of the Speaker of the Assembly and called it a hooliganism. He alleged that the ruling Trinamool Congress is trying to suppress the voice of the opposition. Along with this, he also claimed that Marshall came under the influence of Trinamool Congress and took this action.
However, the Trinamool MLAs defended the decision of the Speaker and said that the BJP was trying to disrupt the proceedings of the assembly. The party supported the chairman’s decision. TMC said that the action of the Speaker was necessary to maintain discipline in the House.
