Jagannath Temple Puri: The temple of Lord Jagannath is situated in Puri, Odisha. Jagannath ji is none other than Shri Krishna himself. His elder brother Balram is present here in the form of Balabhadra and sister Subhadra ji is also present here. Every year a Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath is taken out in the temple, in which the chariots of Balabhadra and Subhadra ji also participate. This holy festival of Rath Yatra is celebrated every year on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month.

This year this holy festival will be celebrated on 16th July. Lakhs of devotees participate in the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath and attain virtue by pulling the ropes of the chariots. The temple of Jagannath ji is full of mysteries. There is some secret hidden here from the idol of God, the flag and the door to the stairs, but do you know that Yamraj, the god of death, lives on one of the stairs of Jagannath ji’s temple?

The staircase of the temple is called Yamshila

We are talking about the third staircase of Jagannath temple. It is believed that the influence of this ladder is so deep that even the biggest devotees of God are afraid to step on this ladder. If someone accidentally steps on it, he feels remorse and gets scared, but Yamraj, the god of death, smiles at this. People of Puri are also afraid of setting foot on the third ladder. This staircase of the temple is called Yamashila.

There is a religious belief that if you step on it while leaving the temple, all the virtues are destroyed. According to the legend, in Kaliyuga, when the devotees started getting freedom from their sins by having darshan of Lord Jagannath, then Yamraj got worried. He reached Lord Jagannath and said that due to this the balance of karma and results is getting disturbed. Then God gave the solution to Yamraj.

Jagannath ji gave place to Yama

Lord Jagannath told Yamraj to take his place on the third step of the temple. Since then this staircase of the temple started being called Yamshila. It is believed that after having darshan, if you step on it, your virtues are destroyed. These 22 stairs of Jagannath temple are called Baisi Pahacha. Every staircase is considered to have its own spiritual significance. They are considered symbols of lust, anger, greed, attachment, ego etc.
