This high school student hacked and deleted the accounts of more than 46,000 subscribers. Tokyo Police has registered a case against him for obstructing the company’s work. It is being told that the boy was learning programming himself since the ninth class.

This incident happened in November last year. The boy discovered a security flaw i.e. loophole in the server of ‘Bandai Channel’. After this, he took the help of ChatGPT to generate the code required for the cyber attack. Using a special program obtained from ChatGPT, he infiltrated the server and canceled the accounts of 46,812 subscribers one after the other. To prevent the servers from blocking him, he also changed his IP address more than 30 times.

Due to this cyber attack, the company had to completely shut down its OTT streaming service for more than a month. It is suspected that during this period, personal information (such as email address and nickname) of about 13.6 lakh customers was leaked. However, the company has clarified that no information related to customers’ credit cards or banking has been leaked.

After the arrest the boy has confessed to his crime. He told the police that he had no previous enmity with the Bandai company. While checking data traffic he discovered a flaw in the server and just wanted to test if he could exploit it. The incident raises concerns about how artificial intelligence (AI) technology can be misused for cybercrime around the world.
