After losing to England by 125 runs in the third T20I, captain Shreyas Iyer termed the team’s batting as ‘poor’. He said that this defeat is unacceptable and the team needs to make a fresh strategy. India is now trailing 2-0 in the five-match series.
nottingham [यूके]July 8 (ANI): After their crushing 125-run defeat to England in the third T20I, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer said the team’s batting performance was “poor” and “unacceptable”. He also said that the team needs to re-strategize.
World T20I champions India, who looked invincible after winning their second consecutive T20 World Cup title at home just a few months ago, now suddenly seem to be struggling. The team, led by new captain Shreyas Iyer, is looking for its first T20I win. After a shocking 0-2 defeat against Ireland a few days ago, Team India is now trailing 2-0 in the five-match series and the most they can do is draw the series. The wait for the first series win under Iyer’s captaincy continues, raising serious questions over the changes in the team after T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav was removed from the captaincy and dropped from the team due to poor form.
‘Poor performance, it cannot be accepted’: Shreyas Iyer
Speaking after the match, Shreyas said that the wicket was not at all 200-run, while Phil Salt led England with a sensational inning of 70 runs in 44 balls. He said, “I think it was a poor performance. Honestly, I can’t use better words than that. Losing by such a big margin is definitely not acceptable. First of all, I think we have to accept this defeat and completely go back to the strategy and see what we did wrong. Looking at the wicket, I don’t think it was a 200-run wicket. But also, the way we batted, we lost four (five) wickets in the powerplay. “I think that ruined the momentum and I definitely think we lost there. So, we have to re-strategize.”
However, looking on the positive side and looking ahead to the fourth T20I on July 9, he said that “there is no need to dwell on the past and the players need to think about creating the impact and momentum that is expected of them.” He also said that when chasing over 200, there should be a set pattern and pace for the run-chase.
Such was the thrill of the match
Sensational bowling spells from fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Josh Tong helped world champions India lose by 125 runs in the third T20I of the five-match series against England in Nottingham on Tuesday. With this win, England have taken a 2-0 lead in the five-match series, the first match of which was washed out due to rain. Now India can only draw the series at most. After a shocking series clean sweep defeat to Ireland a few days ago, India will have to wait a long time for their first series win under new T20I captain Shreyas Iyer and in fact, are yet to win a single match under his captaincy.
England’s innings
India won the toss and decided to bowl first. Phil Salt and Jos Buttler made a stormy opening partnership of 43 runs, in which fast bowler Prince Yadav dismissed Buttler (36 runs from 21 balls, four fours and two sixes). England were then reduced to 111/4 in 12 overs, with Prince and Harshit Rana taking wickets. However, Salt (70 off 44 balls, six fours and three sixes) completed a brilliant half-century and shared a 47-run partnership with Sam Curran. With Curan’s 41* runs in 24 balls (four fours) and Will Jacques’ 14 runs with the help of two sixes in seven balls, England scored 201/7 in 20 overs. Prince (2/30) and Harshit (2/40) were among India’s top bowlers, while Axar Patel also got a wicket.
India’s batting fell apart like a pack of cards
India started well and Abhishek Sharma (10 runs from seven balls, one six) and Vaibhav Suryavanshi (13 runs from five balls, two sixes) were hitting the big shots until Josh and Jofra sent both of them to the pavilion, reducing India to 29/2 in 2.4 overs. From here there was no comeback for India, the team was at 52/5 inside the powerplay and eventually collapsed to 76/10 in 11.4 overs. Ishan Kishan (13) and Akshar (10) were the only two Indian batsmen to touch double figures. Tong (4/28) and Archer (3/29) tore apart India with their pace, and spinner Adil Rashid also took two wickets.
Many records made in the match
With his two wickets, Rashid (468 wickets) became England’s fourth-highest international wicket-taker, overtaking former fast bowler Darren Gough (466 wickets), while Archer (197 wickets) moved closer to 200 wickets in international cricket for England. Rashid (166 wickets) also overtook New Zealand’s Ish Sodhi (165 wickets) to become the second-highest wicket-taker in T20Is, topped by Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan (193 wickets).
Archer received the ‘Player of the Match’ award, while India suffered their biggest defeat in terms of runs in T20Is. It is also the longest winless run in T20Is for India, who have lost four matches with one no result since lifting the T20 World Cup title earlier this year. This is also India’s second lowest T20I all-out total after 74 against Australia in 2008. (ANI)
