Mumbai Monsoon Flooding 2026: Torrential rains in Mumbai have made the condition of people miserable. From home to office and station there is a lot of water. Meanwhile, accidents are also happening due to deadly potholes on the roads.
Mumbai (Maharashtra): Monsoon rains in Mumbai have worsened the condition of the city’s roads. Deep potholes filled with water on many important roads are proving fatal. The condition of the busiest Kurla-Andheri road is even worse. People passing through here say that due to the rough road and potholes hidden in water, minor accidents are happening every day.
Why are Mumbai’s roads becoming death traps?
Zakir Ansari, a local resident, said that the road from White Bridge to Kamani Signal has become very dangerous. He told ANI, “…the potholes here are so bad that bikers slip every day. The condition of the road from White Bridge to Kamani Signal is the same, and it is not even level. The potholes are not visible during the rains. When they get filled with water, accidents happen…”
IMD issued red alert in Mumbai
- On Sunday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for Mumbai and Raigad district for the next three hours. Due to heavy rain since Saturday night, some areas of Mumbai have recorded more than 250-300 mm of rain in the last 23 hours. IMD has predicted moderate to very heavy rain in these areas.
- Over the past few days, the balcony of a dilapidated building in Navi Mumbai’s Belapur village collapsed amid continuous heavy rains. It is being told that this building was in very bad condition. Apart from this, many parts of Thane city were also flooded.
Many trains canceled due to rain havoc
Meanwhile, Western Railway Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Vineet Abhishek said trains continued to operate despite heavy rainfall of over 250 mm on Western Railway’s suburban network since Saturday night. In some areas it rained 150 to 200 mm. “Our entire section received heavy rainfall, but it had no impact on our train operations and our local trains and long distance trains continued to run without any interruption,” he said.
Trees falling on the roads due to rain
- Meanwhile, early in the morning in Ghatkopar, a huge tree was uprooted and fell on a car in Vikrant Circle area, shattering it. A local person said that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had already been informed about this tree, but no action was taken.

It is fortunate that no one was injured.”
Deaths happening in the potholes of Mumbai
- Earlier on Friday, a person died after falling into an open manhole in Mumbai’s Sakinaka area. NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar had blamed this on “lack of proper maintenance” by the authorities concerned. He had said that such incidents happen every year. The victim’s family has demanded accountability, compensation and strict security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
- The NCP (SP) MLA told ANI, “Unfortunately, due to lack of proper maintenance, people fall into these manholes and lose their lives; this is an every year problem. The municipal corporation’s budget is around Rs 81,000 crore. Around Rs 250 crore is spent on pre-monsoon preparations to fix manholes, drains and trees before the rains arrive.”
- Meanwhile, the deceased Shaikh’s wife has blamed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the incident and urged the authorities to ensure that open manholes are properly secured. (ANI)
