Will LPG be cheaper? Government eyes on LPG-Dimethyl Ether blending

Synthetic Fuel Dimethyl Ether

The government may soon prepare a roadmap for mixing synthetic fuel Dimethyl Ether in LPG gas. In this direction, Bureau of Indian Standards has issued the standard for Dimethyl Ether and LPG blending. But experts believe that solid technical research is necessary before implementing it.

LPG is also made from crude oil, like petrol and diesel. When there is a blockage in crude import, the supply of LPG and petrol-diesel is affected. In such times, a mixing policy like Dimethyl Ether can prove helpful and can also reduce costs. This is why BIS has issued its standard.

Dimethyl Ether: Synthetic Fuel

Dimethyl Ether is a type of synthetic fuel. It is believed that in future it will be possible to mix 10-20 percent of it in LPG. The government is also preparing a roadmap for this, so that LPG supply and cost can be controlled in future.

Experts warn

However, many energy experts are cautious about this policy. Experts like Narendra Taneja say that Dimethyl Ether is still in its initial stage. In-depth research will have to be done on its technical and economic aspects. Besides, the government will also have to see how LPG and Dimethyl Ether will be operated together. There are many questions which need to be resolved, only then the mixing policy will prove to be effective and safe.
