The continuous attacks on minority Hindus in Bangladesh are not showing any signs of stopping. Concern is being expressed in India regarding the attacks. Many major political parties of the country including Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress also expressed deep displeasure over the attacks. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed her concern over the current situation in the neighboring country, but stressed that she did not want to comment on the matter as it was a matter related to another country.
Speaking in the West Bengal Assembly in Kolkata, CM Banerjee made it clear that this serious issue has to be resolved by the Central Government and her state government will follow its decision. CM Mamta said that she agrees with the decision of the Central Government on the issue of Bangladesh. In his words, ‘We cannot take any decision regarding Bangladesh.’
Not within our jurisdiction: CM Mamata
Banerjee said, “Bangladesh is a different country. The Government of India will look into this issue. This matter does not come under our jurisdiction. We should not even talk about this nor interfere. “Although we are saddened internally, we follow the policies set by the Centre.”
During her address, Bengal CM Mamata also mentioned that she had talked to ISKCON representatives on this matter, but she did not give any further information about it.
Big relief to ISKCON from HC
On the other hand, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) got a big relief in Bangladesh today. The High Court there rejected the demand for banning the activities of ISKCON in Bangladesh. Earlier, a request was made to the High Court that the court should take suo motu cognizance and pass an order banning the activities of ISKCON in Bangladesh.
Senior advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, Mohammad Monir Uddin, presented some published news related to ISKCON before the High Court bench on Wednesday and requested the court to take suo motu cognizance in this regard and ask the government to ban the organization. Also issue instructions to impose section 144 in Chittagong, Rangpur and Dinajpur.
