The number of air passengers is continuously increasing in the country, 1.36 crore people traveled by flight in October.

Domestic air travel in India grew by 5.3% in October 2024, with IndiGo and Tata group airlines accounting for the major share. Indigo flew the maximum number of passengers. According to DGCA, the number of passengers was 1.36 crore, which was 1.26 crore last year.

IndiGo flew the maximum number of 86.40 lakh passengers, due to which its market share was 63.3%. At the same time, Tata Group’s Air India and Vistara served 26.48 lakh and 12.43 lakh passengers respectively.

Air India’s performance

Air India held 19.4% market share with its low-cost arm Air India Express. The two merged on 1 October, and are now known as Air India Express. Vistara, formerly a partnership between Tata and Singapore Airlines, had a 9.1% market share. Vistara merged with Air India on 12 November. Both together are contributing 28.5% of the passenger traffic.

Indigo dominance

IndiGo not only flew the highest number of passengers but also had the best on-time flights (OTP). IndiGo’s OTP in big cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad was 71.9%. IndiGo maintained its position as the most reliable airline due to its affordable services and better time management.

Performance of other airlines

SpiceJet flew 3.35 lakh passengers in October and gained 2.4% market share. Whereas, Akasa Air served 6.16 lakh passengers and captured 5.4% market share. Government airline Alliance Air had the lowest on-time flight performance at 54.4%. It remained at the bottom among the six major airlines.

Figures for October 2024 show that air passenger traffic in India is continuously increasing. IndiGo and Tata group airlines, Air India and Vistara, are handling a major share of this. Affordable and timely services have kept IndiGo at the forefront, while the expansion of Tata Group can make it stronger in future.
