The government plans to build 100 new airports in the country in the next 10 years. Due to this, there will be a record increase in the number of air passengers in the country. However, its trailer has already started appearing. India’s domestic air passenger traffic increased by 5.3 percent to 1.36 crore in October 2024. Aviation regulator DGCA gave this information in the monthly data released on Tuesday. In October last year, the number of passengers on domestic flights was 1.26 crore.
Indigo becomes market leader
In the same month, low-cost airline IndiGo carried 86.40 lakh passengers and achieved 63.3 percent market share. This was followed by Tata Group’s Air India and Vistara. 26.48 lakh passengers traveled by Air India flights and 12.43 lakh passengers traveled by Vistara. Air India’s figures include passengers traveling on its low-cost unit Air India Express.
DGCA released report
According to data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the market share of Air India (including Air India Express) was 19.4 percent and Vistara’s market share was 9.1 percent during October 2024. It is noteworthy that Vistara also merged with Air India on 12 November. In the month under review, SpiceJet carried 3.35 lakh passengers and Akasa Air carried 6.16 lakh passengers.

According to Bloomberg report, the government is considering building 100 airports in the next five years. A proposal has also been made to start 1000 new routes to connect small towns and villages. It has been told in the report that the number of airports in China is increasing rapidly. Neighboring country China has set a target of building 450 airports by 2035, which is double the number of airports present in 2018.
