Bhopal Gas Tragedy: Union Carbide’s poison is ruining generations of victims

The next generations may have to compensate for the disaster that happened in Bhopal in December 1984. Yes, during the Bhopal gas tragedy, symptoms of poisoning were found in the children of women who were pregnant. This information was given by a former government forensic doctor during a discussion. On the night of December 2, there was a gas leak from the factory of pesticide manufacturing company Union Carbide, due to which about 3800 people died in a single day. A program was organized to discuss this in which the effect of poisonous gas on the children of the victims of the gas tragedy was also seen.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Bhopal gas tragedy, organizations of survivors had organized a program in which Dr. DK Satpathy, former head of the forensic department of Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal, shared his experiences. He said that on the first day of the tragedy, he had conducted 875 post-mortems and in the next five years, he saw the examinations of about 18,000 bodies. He told that when the tragedy occurred, Union Carbide had said that the poisonous gas would have no effect on unborn children.

Up to 50% of babies are poisoned.

Dr. Satapathy had said that when he had examined the pregnant women who died in the gas tragedy, the poisonous substances present in the mother were also found in the child growing in her womb. Although the effect was 50 percent, the poison had reached the children. Dr. Satapathy claimed that the children born to the women who survived the tragedy contained poisonous substances. The next generation has also suffered losses due to this.

The effect will be visible in many generations

Dr. Satapathy said that research was being done on the children of the victims but it was later stopped. He has raised questions on stopping the research. During this, he also told that the effects of gas leakage will be seen in many generations of the women who were among the victims and had given birth to children. Dr. Satpathy told that when the methyl isonate gas released from Union Carbide, which is called MIC gas, came in contact with water, many poisonous gases were formed from it.
