2036 Olympics in India: In a significant step toward bringing the Olympics to India, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) submitted a ‘Letter of Intent’ to the International Olympic Committee’s Future Host Commission on October 1, signaling the country’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
This is the first official step in what could be a transformative endeavor for the country, promoting economic growth and social progress, as well as empowering youth nationwide. The move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier expression of interest in hosting the games, underscoring India’s serious commitment to its Olympic aspirations.
Ahmedabad: The Preferred Host City
Ahmedabad is being positioned as the primary city to host the Games if India’s bid is successful. The city’s infrastructure, especially the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Complex, is considered suitable for an event of this scale. The last major international sporting event hosted by India was the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, and the IOA is optimistic about taking on the global stage once again with the Olympics.
Potential Competition and IOC Support
India faces competition from other nations, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey, who are also vying to host the 2036 Olympics. However, IOC President Thomas Bach has publicly supported India’s interest, adding to the bid’s credibility and appeal.
Indigenous Sports Inclusion Proposal
The Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) has identified a set of indigenous sports that India plans to propose for inclusion if the bid succeeds. These sports include yoga, kho kho, kabaddi, chess, T20 cricket, and squash, all of which represent India’s rich cultural heritage. The goal is not only to host the Olympics but also to bring global attention to traditional Indian disciplines.
Internal Challenges within the IOA
Despite the progress in bidding for the Olympics, the IOA is currently facing internal conflicts. IOA President P.T. Usha is in a standoff with the Executive Council over the CEO appointment, with her choice, Raghuram Iyer, yet to be ratified. Resolving these organizational disputes may be crucial for India’s image and prospects as a potential Olympic host nation.
The final decision on the host city will follow the IOC’s election cycle next year. If successful, India will join the ranks of countries that have hosted one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events, with widespread potential benefits for infrastructure, tourism, and national pride.
