UFC Edmonton 2024 Recap
In the main event, former champ and No. 2 ranked flyweight contender Moreno and No. 3 Amir Albazi finally returned to the Octagon to fight for next contender rights.
Moreno looked sharp throughout all five rounds, out-striking Albazi with superior boxing skills. Although Moreno busted up Albazi’s face, the finish escaped him. En route to earning the unanimous decision, Moreno also earned the record for most significant strikes in flyweight history.
After the decision win, Moreno said, “I feel amazing. I feel fantastic. I feel like a new guy, a new person. I knew I did I need all these months just resting with my family.
“My team and I, we felt a little bit frustrated because we didn’t have the opportunity to show this kind of performance in my last fight, but man, today was amazing. Canada, I hope you enjoyed this fight! I just want to be up on the top again. I want my title back. This is a reminder for the rest of the division!”
In the co-main event, No. 3 ranked UFC women’s flyweight contender Erin Blanchfield took on No. 5 Rose Namajunas in a tough, five-round quest to become a future title contender.
Namajunas fought intelligently on her feet for the first two rounds. Blanchfield got the takedown in round three and scored with ground and pound, then took the fourth with strikes and cage control.
With the fight likely being 2-2, Blanchfield turned up the pressure, got another takedown, and worked with dominant top position to earn the unanimous win on the scorecards.
After earning the points on the judges scorecard, Blanchfield said, “It was a tough fight. And coming off a loss, I wanted that win so bad. I was born tough. I can thank my mom and dad for that.
“I think in that third round, taking her down, putting that pressure on her, got her to slow down a little. I could feel it in the fourth and I felt like I was finding my strikes better. (Next) I would love to fight Alexa Grasso. I think she’s amazing fighter, someone I’ve been watching just like I was watching Rose, and I want to get that win over her.”
Also on the main card, Brendson Ribeiro and Mike Malott earned decision wins, while Jasmine Jasudavicius and Dustin Stoltzfus claimed stoppage wins. The prelims, meanwhile saw two fights end in submission finishes and five go the distance. Here is the full results from UFC on ESPN+ 104:
