With that, in-form Bournemouth convincingly defeated Manchester City with a 2-1 margin, inflicting a first league loss on the champions since December 2023.
Prior to a loss against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, the last-time Manchester City dropped three points in the league happened against Aston Villa at the Villa Park after Leon Bailey’s goal nearly 11 months ago. During this time, Manchester City picked up an astonishing 26 wins in 32 games, while just six of their matches were drawn as they clinched their third successive Premier League title.
Liverpool lead Premier League 2024-25 standings by two points ahead of Manchester City
The first defeat of the 2024-25 Premier League season also meant that Manchester City dropped down to second place on the standings behind Liverpool. After playing 10 matches, Manchester City have 23 points to their name, two less than Liverpool, who have won eight matches apart from losing one and drawing one in the league thus far, while Nottingham Forest reached third place on the points table, a further four points behind the champions.
In the post-match chat, Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, remarked that his players were unable to match the intensity of Bournemouth before congratulating his opponents for their remarkable performance. He was quoted as saying, as per BBC Sport, ‘They [Bournemouth] were another pace today and we could not handle it. We knew we couldn’t match the intensity. We have talked about it. It was an open game. We had chances at the end but I congratulate Bournemouth for the victory.’
