The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced its 2027-28 World Tour calendar, bringing key changes to tournament scheduling, including a revised window for India’s premier badminton event, the India Open Super 750. According to the updated calendar released on Tuesday, the tournament will now be held in February 2027 (February 2-7) and later in January 2028 (January 25-30), marking a shift from its traditional mid-January slot.
The 2026 edition of the India Open, held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi from January 13 to 18, had faced criticism from several top international players. Concerns were raised over air quality levels, cold indoor temperatures, and venue hygiene conditions. The rescheduling is seen as part of broader efforts by the BWF to improve playing conditions and ensure better athlete comfort during major tournaments.
The Syed Modi India International, another key event in India’s badminton calendar, has also been updated. It has been downgraded to a Super 100 tournament and will be held in Lucknow from July 27 to August 1 in 2027, and again from July 25 to 30 in 2028. The changes reflect the BWF’s restructuring of its global circuit to streamline competition levels across regions.
Overall, the BWF confirmed a 35-tournament global circuit for 2027 and 2028, covering Super 100 to Super 1000 events along with the season-ending World Tour Finals. The revamped calendar will run year-round from January to December and feature five Super 1000 tournaments across Asia and Europe, each extending over 11 days with expanded formats including group stages and knockout rounds.
The federation also announced that all tournaments in the new cycle will adopt a 3×15 scoring system starting January 2027, as part of efforts to modernise the sport. BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul said the changes are designed to improve athlete recovery time, enhance global broadcasting reach, and create a more balanced competition structure. The qualification period for the LA28 Olympic Games will run from May 2027 to April 2028, with key tournament hosts such as the Sudirman Cup, World Championships, and Thomas & Uber Cup Finals to be announced separately.
