New Delhi [भारत]June 30 (ANI): General Dheeraj Seth, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM took over as the 31st Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) on Tuesday. He succeeds General Upendra Dwivedi, PVSM, AVSM, who retired after more than four decades of distinguished service.

According to an official release of the Defense Ministry, General Dheeraj Seth is an alumnus of the National Defense Academy, Khadakwasla and was commissioned into the Armored Corps in December 1986. In his distinguished military career spanning nearly four decades, he has gained wide-ranging experience in operational, strategic, capability development and institutional areas, making significant contributions to the combat effectiveness and long-term transformation of the Indian Army.

General officers have commanded at every level in a variety of operational environments. His command assignments include an Armored Regiment in the Desert Sector, an Armored Brigade in the Western Theatre, and a Counter-Insurgency Force in Jammu and Kashmir. As a Lieutenant General, he commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, one of the premier strike formations of the Indian Army. He then served as General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, where he supervised major national and international military events and ceremonial responsibilities. On promotion to the rank of Army Commander, the officer commanded the South Western Command and the Southern Command, giving him the rare distinction of commanding two operational Army Commands and providing strategic surveillance in important theaters for a period of more than two and a half years.

The release said he has served on a number of key staff and strategic appointments that have significantly impacted operational planning, force management and capability development. Widely recognized for his contribution to force modernisation, the General Officer has held key appointments in the strategic planning and capability development verticals of Army Headquarters, shaping its modernization path, capability roadmap and long-term force structure initiatives. His contributions have been instrumental in aligning operational requirements with emerging technologies and the imperatives of the future battlefield.

The release further said that an accomplished military professional, General Dheeraj Seth has consistently excelled in professional military education and has achieved top positions in training courses. He is a graduate of the Higher Command Course and the National Defense College and has also attended the prestigious Command and Staff Course in Paris, which reflects his broad strategic perspective and understanding on contemporary military affairs.
