For the first time in his career, Joel Kelso will start from pole position in Moto3. The Australian was the fastest in Saturday’s qualifying session for the Thai GP in Buriram.
Q2 began with Kelso (BOE Motorsports/KTM) setting the pace, leading José Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo), with David Muñoz (BOE Motorsports/KTM) in third. However, other riders joined the track a bit later.
Iván Ortolá (MT Helmets-MSi/KTM) briefly took the lead on the timesheets before being surpassed by Daniel Holgado (Red Bull GasGas Tech3). Shortly after, the Spaniard was overtaken by Ángel Piqueras (Leopard Racing/Honda) and David Alonso (CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar).
After pit stops, the final minutes brought a shake-up in the timesheets. Kelso secured pole position with his last lap of 1m40.603s, beating Collin Veijer (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) by 0.073s. Piqueras finished third.
The top five were completed by Taiyo Furusato (Honda Team Asia) and Alonso, who will share the second row with sixth-place qualifier Scott Ogden (FleetSafe Honda-MLav Racing). Despite setting the Buriram lap record in Q1, Filippo Farioli (SIC58 Squadra Corse/Honda) was unable to maintain momentum and will start from 15th.
