Ai Ogura has another match point in the Moto2 World Championship, potentially becoming champion this Sunday at the Thai GP. The math is not too complicated.
The Japanese rider from MT Helmets-MSi leads the championship with 241 points, 65 more than Arón Canet (Fantic Racing/Kalex). After the Buriram round, there will be 50 points left to be awarded.
This means that any result in the top five will give Ogura the title at the Thai GP – even if the Spaniard wins. Fermín Aldeguer (SpeedUp/Boscoscuro) and Sergio García (MT Helmets-MSi/Boscoscuro) are 66 points behind the leader.
Thus, if one of them wins, Ogura could even finish sixth and still be champion on Sunday. Any result that leaves the Japanese rider with a 50-point lead over the second-place competitor will not be enough.
This is because Ogura has three wins, compared to two for Canet, three for Aldeguer, and two for García – meaning that the riders who can still mathematically reach the title this year could have more wins at the end of the season.
