Rohit Sharma will make his return to international cricket in the ODI series against Australia. The India ODI captain last represented the Men in Blue in the final of the 2025 Champions Trophy, which they won.
Rohit retired from Test cricket in May 2025 and didn’t travel to England. He had retired from T20Is after leading India to a title win in the 2024 World Cup. Rohit, who hasn’t confirmed whether he will lead India in the 2027 World Cup, is set to captain the team against Australia.
is just one win away from overtaking Rahul Dravid in a huge captaincy list. Dravid, who captained India in the 2007 ODI World Cup, led the Men in Blue to 42 wins from 79 matches before stepping down as the ODI captain.
Rohit has already captained India to 42 wins from 56 wins and is just one win away from overtaking the former India head coach in the elite list. Dravid was the head coach of Team India when they won the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Indian captains with most ODI wins
MS Dhoni tops the list of Indian captains with the most ODI wins. Under him, the two-time ODI World Cup Champions won 110 out of 200 matches. Dhoni made way for Virat Kohli in January 2017.
Mohammad Azharuddin sits in the second position. He led India to 90 wins from 174 matches. He is the only Indian captain to lead the country in three 50-over World Cups. Sourav Ganguly sits in third position. Ganguly-led India made it to the final of the 2003 ODI World Cup.
Virat Kohli captained India to 65 wins. He couldn’t lead India to an ICC title win but enjoyed huge success as the leader in Test cricket. Rohit replaced Virat as India’s Test, ODI and T20I captain. Both Virat and Rohit are only active in ODIs.
