Without CCTV and witnesses, UP Police’s gold medalist dog ‘Mary’ solved the Sambhal rape case by just sniffing a pot and put the accused behind the bars.
Be careful: Everyone has heard this saying that the law has a long arm. But when man-made modern cameras and modern technology become completely helpless, then a living example of how the sense of smell given by nature can track down a dreaded criminal even from the underworld, was seen in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. When all the police speculations and traditional methods of investigation failed in the case of heinous sexual assault of a 6-year-old innocent girl in Babrala area on the night of 19th June, a messiah of the ‘K-9’ unit of Uttar Pradesh Police showed the light of justice in this dark case. This messiah is not a human being, but the star member of the dog squad of Sambhal Police – 7 year old Labrador dog ‘Mary’, who with her unmatched intelligence not only exposed the accused but also played the biggest role in putting him behind the bars.

Silent innocent and failed technology: There was a blind wall in front of the police
Date 19th June. There was an outcry in Babrala area when a mother found her 6-year-old innocent daughter bleeding and suffering in a critical condition. The girl, who was the victim of cruelty, was in such a state of shock and fear that she was not even in a position to tell the police who had committed this brutality on her. As soon as the information was received, there was panic in the police administration and investigation teams along with forensic experts quickly reached the spot. The officials collected forensic samples from the crime scene, but a huge mountain of challenges stood before them. There was no CCTV camera active around the place of the incident nor were there any eyewitnesses to this dreadful crime in the silence of the night. The police had no means left to trace the accused.

That smell of ‘Gamcha’ and that dreadful journey of Mary
When all avenues of conventional policing and electronic surveillance were closed, officials recalled the dog squads of Sambhal district. ‘Mary’ entered the scene, who is known for her keen and sharp sense of smell. While conducting a thorough search of the incident spot, the police found a ‘Gamchha’, which the accused had forgotten at the time of the incident. Mary was made to smell the towel and was given the task of following the scent. Mary’s attitude changed as soon as she smelled the pot. Without wasting any time he caught that smell in the air and started running through the narrow, dark streets of Sambhal. The police team was running behind Mary with bated breath. After continuously following the smell for about a few hundred meters, Mary suddenly stopped at the door of the house of a person named Sandeep, resident of Babrala and started barking loudly. This accurate tracking of Mary had placed the police directly at the doorstep of the main accused.

Midnight encounter: When police gave a befitting reply to the deadly attack
After Mary’s strong signal, the police started investigating the horoscope of accused Sandeep and laid a trap to nab him. On the night of June 22, when police teams were checking suspects in the area, accused Sandeep, seeing himself surrounded, fired indiscriminately at the police team and tried to escape. In this deadly attack, a policeman was injured by a bullet. The police also retaliated in self-defense without wasting time. The bullet fired by the police directly hit the leg of accused Sandeep, due to which he fell down bleeding. The police immediately took him into custody and sent him to the hospital for treatment.
