Actor and now director Kayoze Irani’s debut movie, Sarzameen, stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, Kajol and Ibrahim Ali Khan. The action-thriller, streaming on JioHotstar came with a variety of adventures, especially because this year also marked the directorial debut of his father and brilliant actor Boman Irani. As the filmmaker celebrates this double win, Kayoze Irani revealed that his father is his biggest critic, in an exclusive conversation with The Daily Jagran. Kayoze Irani said, “Never ever goes easy on me. He is my big critic because he wants me to achieve the most as well. If I have done a 7 on 10, 6 on 10 or 9 on 10, he wants an 11 on 10.”
Kayoze Irani mentioned that his father’s criticism never comes from a place of arrogance. “His criticism is the one I listen to the most because it never comes from a place of ‘listen to me what I’m doing, I’ve been doing this for years.’ It comes from a place of ‘listen Kayo, let’s work together, let’s see what we can do better so we bounce off the script to each other.’ He did this with me on Mehta Boys as well,” he shared
Kayoze Irani added, “His criticism is never something that I feel bad about. I just say oh you’re not feeling okay about let me see what I can do about it.”
Boman Irani, one of the most renowned actors in the film industry played Lt. General I.S. Kanwar in Sarzameen. While The Mehta Boys (directed by Boman Irani) wears its heart on its sleeve, Sarzameen paints politics with pride. The father-son duo’s paths may diverge in tone and style, but both storytellers are bound by a shared compass pointing toward the same creative truth. Kayoze Irani emphasised that he and his father are very cinema inclined. “We’re big lover of cinema. We think of cinema as a mandir,” he highlighted.
Kayoze even clarified that he won’t be coming in front of the camera anytime again. “After SOTY I went back to being assistant. I immediately did Bombay Talkies with Karan sir then we did Lust Stories. I was associate director on the film that never got made,” he revealed.
