Trump-Modi’s new chemistry amid global trade war, India is moving forward with caution!

PM Modi and Trump in G-7 summit

The meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump during the G7 summit held in France has once again brought India-US relations into the center of discussion. Both the leaders talked about taking the relations forward, but many old disputes still remain. Issues like trade agreement, American attitude towards Pakistan, purchase of Russian oil and situation in West Asia remain a matter of concern for India. This is the reason why India is now being more cautious in relations with America.

In a face-to-face meeting after almost a year, US President Donald Trump openly praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Trump described Modi as his old friend and called him a very strong negotiator. On the other hand, Modi’s stance appeared quite balanced and formal. According to ET report, this change is part of India’s new strategy. India is now more cautious than before regarding its relations with America and is taking every step thoughtfully.

Many differences increased in the last one and a half year

Relations between India and America have strengthened in recent years, but in the last one and a half years, differences have also emerged between the two countries on many issues. Prominent among these are trade tariffs, oil imports from Russia, US relations with Pakistan and the situation in West Asia. Analysts say that these problems will not be solved merely by the meeting of leaders. Both the countries will have to have concrete talks on many complex issues.

Effort to reduce dependence on America

Foreign policy experts believe that India is now moving towards diversifying its diplomatic and economic partnerships. Under this strategy, Modi also met the leaders of Canada, Britain and European countries during the G7 conference. The recent trade agreement between Britain and India is being considered a big step in this direction. Apart from this, efforts are also underway to increase economic cooperation with Canada and the European Union.

Trade deal still in limbo

Talks on trade agreement have been going on between India and America for a long time, but no final result has been reached yet. Trump has claimed that both the countries are close to an agreement, but experts believe that there is still agreement on many important issues. American trade representatives are going to come to India next week, which is expected to give momentum to the talks. However, issues like tariffs and trade checks still remain a major hurdle.

India’s concern about Pakistan increased

A major reason for India’s concern is America’s increasing contacts with Pakistan. Trump has been continuously claiming that he played a role in reducing tensions between India and Pakistan, whereas India completely rejects this claim. Apart from this, the increasing closeness of the American administration with Pakistan’s military leadership has also become a matter of concern for India. Experts believe that this may create new tension in the relations between the two countries.

West Asia and Indian interests

The increased tension in West Asia in recent months has also affected India. The safety of thousands of Indian citizens and sailors working in the region remains New Delhi’s priority. Modi also raised this issue in his meeting with Trump and stressed the need to ensure security of Indian citizens. India wants stability in the region so that energy supply and trade are not affected.

Russian oil becomes a big question

Buying cheap crude oil from Russia has been an important part of India’s energy strategy. However, America has been pressurizing India for a long time to reduce Russian oil imports. Now it will be important to see how India balances its energy needs and strategic relations with the US in the coming months.

Before the meeting, the US Defense Department’s discussion of changing the name of the Indo-Pacific Command also sparked a new debate. Experts believe that this may raise questions about America’s strategic priorities in the region. India has been trying to strengthen its role in the Indo-Pacific region for a long time and is keeping an eye on such signals.

Relationships strong, but challenges remain

Although there are many differences between the two countries, the relationship between India and America remains on a strong foundation. The interests of both the countries are linked to each other in areas like trade, investment, technology, defense and strategic cooperation. Experts believe that in the coming times, India will continue its partnership with America, but will also strengthen its relations with other countries. This balanced strategy seems to be becoming the new basis of India’s foreign policy.
