This romantic song from the film Chori Chori was sung by Lata and Manna Dey together. But earlier the choice for this song was Lata and Mukesh. The producers of the film wanted only Lata and Mukesh to sing this song. Whereas Shankar-Jaikishan duo wanted Manna Dey and Lata in this song. Producer Meiyappan Chettiar had come to Bombay especially from Madras and he wanted to see the recording of Lata-Mukesh. But Mukesh did not come. Meiyappan said that only Mukesh will sing the song. Then Raj Kapoor entered and somehow convinced Meiyappan.
The song was recorded by Manna Dey and Lata and further history bears witness. Even today this song is very much liked. Why did Manna Dey not want to sing with Kishore?
Manna Dey was a classical singer and he did not sing any songs. He himself was very sincere about the songs and their lyrics. When he was offered the song Ek Chatur Naar from the film Padosan, he initially refused to sing. He said that funny words are used in this song and hence he does not want to sing such songs. Mahmood also tried to convince him. But Manna Dey was adamant. Somehow Manna Dey sang this song without hesitation. But he did not sing all these songs very enthusiastically and was not even used to it. But when the song became such a superhit, he was also happy with its success.
