Kanwar Yatra 2026: The month of Sawan is considered very sacred in Hindu religion. This month has been dedicated to Mahadev, the god of gods. This year the month of Sawan will last from 30th July to 28th August. Worshiping Lord Shiva and performing Jalabhishek in Sawan is considered especially fruitful. By worshiping and performing Jalabhishek in this month, Lord Shiva becomes pleased and bestows blessings. According to mythological beliefs, in the month of Sawan, Shiva swallowed the poison released from the churning of the ocean. At that time, the heat in his body had increased due to the effect of poison, then the Gods offered him water and provided him coolness.
From that time the tradition of offering water to Lord Shiva in the month of Sawan started. Kanwar Yatra also has special significance in Sawan. According to beliefs, Lord Shri Ram started the tradition of Kanwar Yatra. This tradition is followed even today. In the month of Sawan, Kanwariyas anoint Shivalinga by taking Ganga water in Kanwar. Even at this time, Shiva devotees bring water from holy rivers and offer it on Shivalinga. In some areas, Kanwar Yatra is also taken out on the occasion of Mahashivratri.
monthly shivratri
The festival of monthly Shivratri is celebrated on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of every month. On this day Lord Shiva is worshiped with fast and rituals. Even on monthly Shivaratri, devotees anoint Shivalinga with holy water. At many places, devotees take a resolution and undertake a short distance Kanwar Yatra.
pradosh fast
Pradosh fast is observed on Trayodashi date of Krishna and Shukla Paksha of every month. This is a special opportunity to get the blessings of Lord Shiva. On this day, Lord Shiva is worshiped during Pradosh period. At many places, this short distance Kanwar Yatra is also taken out.
Kartik month
In some local traditions, water is offered to Shiva temples even during the month of Kartik. This tradition has been going on since ancient times. Although it is not as widespread as Sawan. At this time also, short distance Kanwar Yatra is taken out in some places.
