New Delhi: Sonal Dinusha continued his impressive run with the bat for Sri Lanka with a sublime century in their first innings of the ongoing second against India in Colombo on Wednesday.
Dinusha ended with an unbeaten 85 at stumps on Day 3 and went on to complete his ton for the hosts in the morning session on Day 4.
Dinusha scored 103 off 162 balls before getting dismissed by debutant Saransh Jain as India enforced the follow-on after bundling out for 290 runs in their first innings. Though he failed to help his side avoid the follow-on in the Colombo Test, Dinusha became the first Sri Lankan batter to achieve a rare feat against India in Tests.
He became the first Sri Lankan batter to score multiple Test centuries against India while batting at no.6 or lower. Dinusha scored a brilliant 103-run knock for Sri Lanka while batting at no.7 in their first innings of the ongoing second Test. He earlier scored 100 runs while batting at no.6 in the first Test against India in Galle.
2nd Sri Lankan to score multiple tons in first two Tests against India
Dinusha also became only the second Sri Lankan batter after Duleep Mendis to score multiple centuries in his first two Test matches against India. Mendis scored two centuries in his first Test match against India in 1982. Overall, Everton Weekes, Garry Sobers, Zaheer Abbas, Robin Smith, Gary Kirsten and Jesse Ryder are the batters to have scored multiple centuries in their first two Test matches against India.
Dinusha top-scored for Sri Lanka in their first innings of the Colombo Test with his 103 off 162 balls, which was laced with eight fours and three sixes. However, his ton was not enough to help Sri Lanka avoid the follow-on as they were bundled out for 290 runs in their first innings, trailing India’s first-innings total of 503 runs by 213 runs.
Sooriyabandara, Mendis lead Sri Lanka’s resistance in 2nd innings
Sri Lanka batted with great intent and temperament after being asked to follow on in their second innings. Pasindu Sooriyabandara slammed a brilliant 92 while Kamindu Mendis scored a gritty 52 to lead the hosts’ resistance in their second innings. The duo shared a 115-run stand for the third wicket to frustrate the Indian bowlers in their second innings on Day 4 of the Test match on Wednesday.
