A sensational case has come to light in Gurugram of a woman being confined in a flat for two years and forced to do bonded labour. Police, district administration and an NGO together rescued the woman. The woman was beaten so badly that one of her ears stopped working. The name of the victim woman is Bhadu Mandi and her age is 39 years. She hails from Birbhum district of West Bengal and comes from a tribal community. He was rescued from a flat in DLF Garden City in Sector 91, Gurugram.

The woman’s relatives say that Bhadu was brought to Delhi for domestic work. For this his family was given an advance of Rs 40,000. But after being brought here everything changed. Bhadu’s sister Lakshmi Tudu alleged that she was forced to work for more than 16 hours every day in the flat. He was also beaten badly. He was neither allowed to go out of the house nor allowed to talk to his family. Smart locking system was installed in the flat. Whenever the flat owner went out, he used to lock Bhadu inside. The whole matter came to light when Bhadu secretly called his sister from the phone of a service technician who had come to the flat for repairs a few days ago.

After this, Bhadu’s sister Lakshmi contacted the authorities in West Bengal. On June 4, a case was registered at Ilambazar police station in West Bengal under the Bonded Labor System (Abolition) Act, 1976 and section 127(4) related to forced labour. An NGO named ‘Nari O Shishu Kalyan Kendra’ helped the family and took the matter to Gurugram authorities.

After investigation, the Labor Department accepted that this was a case of bonded labor and recommended immediate action to the District Magistrate of Gurugram. The District Magistrate directed the police to take action. After this, Bhadu’s sister Lakshmi reached Gurugram and a team of West Bengal Police also came to Delhi. West Bengal Police, Gurugram Police and the district administration together conducted a raid and rescued the woman.

After being rescued, Bhadu told the officials that due to her owner’s continuous beatings, she was unable to raise her right hand and had also lost hearing in her right ear. He told that just a day before the rescue, he was beaten badly in the morning and he was afraid for his life. At present, the injured woman is being given medical help. Police are investigating the matter further.
