Uluberia parliamentary seat is located in Howrah district of West Bengal. Uluberia subdivision was formed in 1873 with the name of “Mahishrekha”, but it was named Uluberia in 1882. The famous Baptist William Carey visited Uluberia several times during British rule. Civil disobedience movement was called for by Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi in the 1930s. At that time, supporters of independence had staged a fierce demonstration in Shyampur police station of Uluberia. After becoming the Congress President, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose went to Gorur Haat in Uluberia in the year 1938 and addressed the public there.
Uluberia Lok Sabha seat came into existence in 1952. According to 2011 census, the population here is 2051790. The population is 69.55 percent urban and 30.45 percent rural. The percentage of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Caste population is around 19.63 and 15 percent respectively.
Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency was once a stronghold of the Left, but since 2009 this seat has been held by Trinamool Congress. Seven assembly constituencies belonging to this Lok Sabha constituency are also under Howrah district.
TMC captures all seven assembly seats of Uluberia
Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency has seven constituencies namely Uluberia East, Uluberia North, Uluberia South, Shyampur, Bagnan, Amta and Udaynarayanpur. In the 2021 assembly elections, Trinamool candidates had won all seven seats.
Trinamool is counting on Sajda Ahmed in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and again the party has made her its candidate. Whereas, BJP has made Arun Uday Pal Chaudhary its candidate.
TMC’s winning streak continues in Uluberia
Trinamool maintained its hold in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He had nominated Sajda Ahmed. This time, instead of CPM, Trinamool faced mainly BJP. Sajda got 6 lakh 94 thousand 945 votes. Whereas, BJP candidate Joy Banerjee got 4 lakh 79 thousand 586 votes. Whereas, CPM candidate Maqsuda Khatoon got 81 thousand 314 votes. Sajda won by 2 lakh 15 thousand 359 votes.
After the death of Sultan Ahmed, his wife became MP
When Sultan Ahmed died in 2017, by-election was held on this seat. In this by-election, Trinamool has made Sajda Ahmed, wife of late Sultan Ahmed, its candidate. He won the by-election.
In the 2014 elections also, Trinamool had made Sultan Ahmed its candidate. This time again Sultan Ahmed reached Parliament by defeating his nearest CPM candidate. In the 2014 elections, Sultan Ahmed got 5 lakh 70 thousand 785 votes. Whereas, his nearest CPM candidate Sabiruddin Mollah got 3 lakh 69 thousand 563 votes. Sultan Ahmed won by 2 lakh 1 thousand 222 votes.
CPI(M)’s Hannan Mollah was elected MP for eight consecutive terms.
In the Lok Sabha elections held for the first time in the country in 1952, Congress won the Uluberia seat. Since 1971, this constituency has become a stronghold of the Left. Till 2009, Uluberia was under the control of CPM. In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the Left’s stronghold Uluberia collapsed. Trinamool Congress candidate Sultan Ahmed won. Uluberia Lok Sabha seat has been held by Trinamool since 2009. This seat was considered the stronghold of CPI(M). From 1980 to 2004, CPI(M)’s Hannan Mollah was elected MP from here eight consecutive times.
