Tehran: Iran has announced the date of the funeral of its supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. 106 days after Khamenei’s death, Iran has said that he will be buried on July 9. Khamenei was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike on 28 February.
As part of the funeral programmes, a condolence march lasting three days will also be organized across the country. Iran has made this announcement at a time when there are reports of peace talks with America reaching the final stages. It is believed that Iran hopes that a diplomatic agreement will be reached with America soon, that is why it has officially announced the date of Khamenei’s funeral.
Security is being said to be the reason for delaying the last rites for so many days. There were fears that an attack might take place during the funeral. Millions of people are expected to attend Khamenei’s funeral, so security was a major challenge. Following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, his son Mujtaba Khamenei was elected the new supreme leader on 8 March.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was a prominent leader in the modern history of Iran. His death on 28 February was the biggest loss for Iran in this war. Condolence processions will be taken out in Tehran, Qom and Mashhad from July 4. After this, on July 9, he will be laid to rest at the shrine of Shia Imam, Imam Riza, which is in Mashhad.
Earlier it was said that the funeral would take place in the middle of this month, but it could not happen due to the delay in the peace agreement. This is the first time Iran has set a date. No picture or any other information about Khamenei has been revealed since the attack. The entire world is watching whether current supreme leader Mujtaba Khamenei, who has not appeared in public since the attack, will attend the event.
