Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar and pace bowler Prasidh Krishna made unique history on Day 3 of the fifth Test at The Oval in London on Saturday.
The duo shared a 39-run partnership to etch their names in the history of Indian cricket. Incidentally, all 39 runs were scored by Washington, as Prasidh could not open his account and finished the innings on an unbeaten 0. This partnership now stands as the highest-ever Test partnership for India in which one batter did not contribute a single run. Washington was at his explosive best, smashing four boundaries and as many sixes, while Prasidh made sure he did not lose his wicket, maintaining his firm position at the other end.
Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 118, while Akash Deep contributed a gritty 66. The duo shared a 107-run partnership for the third wicket. This was Jaiswal’s second hundred of the series. His innings was studded with 14 boundaries and two sixes, while Akash Deep hit 12 boundaries.
Later in the innings, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington scored 53 each, while Dhruv Jurel made 34 as India ended their innings on 396 all out.
One of the most consistent batters of the series, Jadeja hit his fifth half-century. He also scored a ton in the Manchester Test, helping India avoid defeat at Old Trafford. Jadeja has become the third Indian batter to score 500-plus runs in the series after Shubman Gill and KL Rahul. Washington and Prasidh’s partnership helped India go past the 350-run mark and set a 374-run target for England.
