Actor Babil Khan says he has never been particularly good at hiding his reactions to gifts, especially the familiar soan papdi boxes that seem to circulate among households every Diwali.
Speaking to IANS, Babil described the traditional gift as the “rock-hard, neon-glazed” box that appears to travel through several homes before reaching its recipient. However, he said he values the thought and good wishes behind a gift more than the present itself.
Asked whether he had ever disliked a Diwali gift but pretended to like it, Babil said: “I think everyone has survived the infamous passing-the-parcel cycle of the rock-hard, neon-glazed soan papdi box that looks like it has traveled through three postal codes before reaching your living room!”
He added that his expressions often reveal his reaction immediately, but he appreciates the effort and intention behind every gift.
Talking about his Diwali traditions, Babil said he spends a couple of unhurried hours every year setting up traditional earthen diyas with mustard oil and cotton wicks alongside his mother. He described the ritual as deeply meditative.
Asked what he wished to leave behind this Diwali, the actor said he wanted to let go of overthinking and self-doubt. He hopes to welcome greater trust in his creative journey, more laughter with loved ones and the courage to take artistic risks without fearing failure.
