New Delhi: The troubles for Trinamool Congress (TMC) are not showing any signs of abating. The party’s Rajya Sabha MP from West Bengal, Prakash Chik Baraik has resigned from his membership. This is the third resignation from Rajya Sabha within a week. In his resignation letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan, Baraik said that he is resigning the membership of the House with immediate effect.

- The letter reads, “I hereby resign from the membership of Rajya Sabha, which may please be accepted with immediate effect.”
- He also thanked the Chairman and the Secretariat for the support he received during his tenure.
- The letter further reads, “I express my gratitude to you, the Honorable Deputy Chairman and all the officers of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, who provided every kind of help and cooperation during my tenure.”
What is the meaning of TMC MP’s resignation?
- This resignation has come at a time when the tussle within the Trinamool Congress has intensified. There is a phase of resignations going on in the party and rebellious attitudes are also being seen, due to which questions are being raised on the unity of the party.
TMC’s rebel MLAs increased from 58 to 64.
- Rebel TMC leader Ritabrata Banerjee on Wednesday made it clear that his group is not planning any merger with Congress. He stressed that whatever is happening is an internal matter of the party.
- “Right now we have 64 MLAs with us,” Banerjee told ANI. He claimed that his faction earlier had the support of 58 MLAs, which has now increased to 64. He also said that his group will soon meet the West Bengal Assembly Speaker to strengthen its position.
Is TMC merging with Congress?
- Dismissing merger speculations, he said, “As far as our legislature party is concerned, we are definitely not joining the Congress. More than two-thirds of the MPs in Parliament are also not merging with the Congress.” Banerjee insisted that no section of the party – be it MPs, municipality members, Zilla Parishad or Panchayat members – was moving towards any merger.
- He asked, “Who is merging with whom? There is no question of merger.”
