- CM Vijay had also expressed grief over the death of the director on his X account. He remembered Bharathiraja as a director who brought “the flavor of village life” to the big screen. CM said that Bharathiraja has created a special place in the history of Tamil cinema through his memorable stories and powerful characters.
- Vijay wrote, “I am deeply saddened and shocked to hear the news of the demise of Tamil cinema director Imayam Shri Bharathiraja. Shri Bharathiraja made many successful films full of vibrancy of village life and left a unique mark in the world of Tamil cinema.
- He further said, “He received several national and state awards, including the country’s highest honor Padma Shri, for his films. His contribution in grooming generations of artistes will always be recorded in the history of Tamil cinema. The demise of director Imayam Sri Bharathiraja is a huge and irreparable loss to the Tamil film industry.
CM made a big announcement on the death of Bharathiraja
- Showing solidarity with the filmmaker’s family, friends and fans, Vijay also announced that Bharathiraja will be given a state honor during his funeral in honor of his immense contribution to cinema. He said, “I express my deepest condolences to his grieving family, friends, members of the film fraternity and fans. I pray that his soul rests in peace at the feet of God. As a tribute to Shri Bharathiraja’s contribution to the film industry, a state honor will be given as a mark of respect during his last journey.

Who was Bharathiraja, the director of Tamil cinema?
- Bharathiraja started his directorial career in 1977 with the famous film ’16 Vayathinile’ and later became one of the most influential filmmakers of Tamil cinema. In his career spanning more than four decades, he directed more than 40 films and earned the title of ‘Iyikkunnar Imayam’ (Emperor of Directors) for his brilliant contribution to cinema. Some of his most celebrated films include ‘Kilke Pogum Rail’, ‘Sigappu Rojakkal’, ‘Alaigal Oivathillai’, ‘Kaadhal Oviyam’ and ‘Mudhal Mariyathai’, many of which are considered classics today.
- His last work as a director was ‘Paravai Kootill Vaazhum Maangal’, a segment of Prime Video’s anthology series ‘Modern Love Chennai’.
- Apart from direction, Bharathiraja’s acting career was also quite successful. He was recently seen in Mohanlal starrer film ‘Thudaram’.
