Jorge Martin picked the perfect moment to remind the paddock exactly why he’s still very much in this title fight. With the championship standings showing him dead level with Marc Marquez heading into the weekend, Martin went out and took pole position at the Red Bull Ring, firing in a 1:27.917 that nobody else in the field could match.
It wasn’t for lack of trying. Marquez pushed him all the way, ending up just 0.015 seconds shy of pole, close enough to sting but not close enough to deny Martin the statement he clearly wanted to make. Pedro Acosta continued his strong home weekend for KTM in third, 0.056 seconds back, keeping the manufacturer’s home crowd fully engaged in the fight at the front. Marco Bezzecchi rounded out row two in fourth for Aprilia, with Ai Ogura completing an emphatic return from injury by qualifying fifth, just a day after stunning everyone with third place in combined practice.
Alex Marquez kept Gresini Ducati firmly in the conversation in sixth, with Francesco Bagnaia seventh, a genuinely pleasing result for the factory Ducati rider after his struggles through recent rounds and his fight through Q1 just a day earlier. Fabio Di Giannantonio and Fabio Quartararo rounded out eighth and ninth, with Johann Zarco tenth for Castrol Honda LCR, capping a strong session for the Frenchman after also topping Q1. Brad Binder and Fermin Aldeguer completed the twelve-man field in eleventh and twelfth.
The timing of Martin’s pole could hardly be more significant. He arrived at this weekend locked in an exact tie with Marquez at the top of the standings, 274 points apiece, with Marco Bezzecchi the closest challenger 33 points further back. Taking pole in front of Marquez, on a weekend where every point and every position could prove decisive, gives Martin the best possible platform heading into Saturday’s Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix. With the margins this tight at the very top of the championship, a pole position isn’t just a good session, it’s a genuine statement of intent in a title fight that looks set to go down to the wire.
