Sawan Kanwar Yatra 2026: Kanwar Yatra is one of the sacred journeys of Sanatan Dharma. During Kanwar Yatra, Shiva devotees undertake long journey on foot to fetch Ganga water from pilgrimage sites like Haridwar, Gaumukh or Gangotri. Then carrying a Kanwad filled with water on the shoulder, they anoint Mahadev on Shivratri in the month of Sawan. During this time, the echo of Har Har Mahadev is heard. Kanwar Yatra starts every year on the first day of the month of Sawan.
This year the holy Kanwar Yatra is going to start from 30th July. According to Drik Panchang, this year the month of Sawan will start from July 30, 2026. Whereas Saavan will end on 28 August 2026 with the full moon of Saavan month.
Shiva’s consecration will take place on Sawan Shivratri.
As soon as the month of Sawan starts, the holy Kanwar Yatra will start on 30th July, the first day of Sawan Monday. Shivratri of Sawan month will be celebrated on 11 August 2026. Kanwar Yatra will end on this day. On this day, devotees will anoint Shivalinga with Ganga water and receive the blessings of Lord Shiva. Offering water to Lord Shiva on the day of Sawan Shivratri is considered extremely auspicious.
Types of Kanwar Yatra
Kanwar Yatra is done in four different types. First of all General Kanwar Yatra it occurs. In this, the devotees anoint Lord Shiva with Ganga water while stopping as per their convenience. Steep Kanwar Yatra. The rules of this journey are strict. After bringing water in it, Kanwar cannot be kept on the ground during the entire journey. In this, two or more devotees lift the kanwad. Dandi Kanwar Yatra. This journey is considered to be the most difficult, because in this the devotees move lying down on the ground. Postal Kanwar Yatra. In this, devotees carry Ganga water and move rapidly towards Shiv Dham without stopping. Like a mail messenger goes running.

Before taking out Kanwar Yatra, one has to first adopt a virtuous lifestyle. One has to give up consumption of non-vegetarian and tamasic things a few weeks before the journey. One has to stay away from things like alcohol, cigarettes and tobacco. One has to maintain purity in one’s thoughts while travelling. Anger, hatred or any bad thoughts are not brought to mind. The entire journey is done with devotion, restraint and discipline.
