After the defeat of Team India in the World Cup 2023, the Board of Control for Cricket in India took its first major decision regarding the head coach. On Tuesday 28 November, the Indian Board announced to retain Rahul Dravid as the head coach. The board said in its announcement that considering the kind of cricket Team India has played under the leadership of Dravid, it was decided to retain Dravid and his coaching staff. However, just two days later, Dravid surprised everyone with a statement.
On Thursday 30 November, a meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India was held in New Delhi, in which the performance of Team India in the World Cup was reviewed. Apart from Dravid, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar and BCCI Secretary Jai Shah were also present in this review meeting. Apart from this, the selection of Team India for the South Africa tour was also discussed. When Dravid came out after this meeting, while talking to the media, Dravid surprised with his answer regarding coaching.
Why did Dravid not sign the contract?
While talking to the media, Rahul Dravid said that he has not signed any kind of contract yet but has talked to BCCI about it. Actually, BCCI announced the retention of Dravid but did not tell how long his tenure will last. Last time, Dravid’s tenure was of 2 years, which started after the T20 World Cup 2021 and ended with the final of the ODI World Cup 2023.

It is believed that Dravid’s tenure was discussed in the review meeting, which has been continued till the T20 World Cup. Although it has not been announced officially. When Dravid was asked about this after the meeting, the Indian coach said that he has not signed the contract yet. However, Dravid also made it clear that as soon as the contract reaches him, he will sign it.
How was Dravid’s tenure?
But Dravid did not give any answer regarding his tenure and said that only BCCI will tell about this. During Dravid’s tenure, Team India could win only the title of Asia Cup 2023. They had to face defeat in Asia Cup 2022, T20 World Cup 2022, World Test Championship 2023 and then ODI World Cup 2023. The team had won the home Test series against Australia, while also winning the Test series in Bangladesh. However, the team lost in the South Africa Test series even after taking the lead.
